Italia Morayta Award

In order to carry on the work of Italia Morayta, the pioneer of conference interpreting in Mexico, who fought to achieve professional recognition for the work of interpreters and translators, for their working conditions and for training new generations, the Italia Morayta Foundation establishes the Italia Morayta Award, in the following categories:

In 2017 the Italia Morayta Award will be awarded in each of its four categories, and beginning in 2018 will be delivered each year in a different category. In the first year, the Italia Morayta Award will comprise a diploma, a 20 peso gold Azteca coin and a print by a Mexican artist. From 2018, the 20 peso gold Azteca will be replaced by a 50 peso gold Centenario.

Italia Morayta Award for conference interpreters

  • FIRST. Any Mexican or foreign interpreter over the age of 65 may be a candidate for the Italia Morayta Award for conference interpreters who uses Spanish as one of their working languages, they have shown outstanding ethics and professionalism, and where their career has been characterized by promoting knowledge among new generations of interpreters.

  • SECOND. Nominations may be presented by any conference interpreter or collectively by professional associations at national, regional or international level, as well as by any academic institution. The Italia Morayta Award for conference interpreters may also be awarded to an interpreter who, in the opinion of the members of the JURY, merits it even though a nomination has not been submitted.

  • THIRD. The call for submissions for the Italia Morayta Award for conference interpreters will be launched on July 1 of the year immediately prior to the year it is awarded.

  • FOURTH. Sponsors shall present their nominations including the supporting documents they consider necessary to the PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS (presidencia@italiamorayta.org) at the latest on August 30 of the year immediately prior to the year the Italia Morayta Award for conference interpreters is awarded.

  • FIFTH. The full documentation relating to the nominations will be presented to the PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, who will make a pre- selection and send a list of finalists to the jury. The identity of the candidates and the content of the deliberations will be considered confidential. The documents will be destroyed following the decision.

  • SIXTH. The JURY will be comprised of the STEERING COMMITTEE and by two specialists on the issue selected by the STEERING COMMITTEE. The JURY must meet in person or video conference to make a decision. The STEERING COMMITTEE will determine which of its members will act as President and Secretary of the jury respectively. The members of the BOARD OF DIRECTORS will have voice but no vote in the deliberations.

  • SEVENTH. The decision of the JURY is final and shall be made public on January 23 of the year in which the Italia Morayta Award for conference interpreters will be awarded. The BOARD OF DIRECTORS will establish the date of presentation of the Italia Morayta Award for conference interpreters and will first advise the person selected, also informing them that their guests will be welcome at the award ceremony.

  • EIGHTH. Members of the JURY or members of the BOARD OF DIRECTORS cannot be candidates, but may make nominations.

  • NINTH. The Italia Morayta Award for conference interpreters cannot be granted more than once to the same person, and nor may there be more than one winner each year.

  • TENTH. The Italia Morayta Award for conference interpreters may be declared void and may not be awarded in memoriam.

  • ELEVENTH. The Italia Morayta Award for conference interpreters will be granted in 2017 and, beginning in 2018, every four years (2018, 2022, 2026…)

  • TWELFTH. Any situation not foreseen in these regulations will be jointly resolved by the BOARD OF DIRECTORS and the JURY.

Nominations may be presented by any community interpreter or collectively by professional associations at national, regional or international level, as well as by any academic institution. The Italia Morayta Award for community interpreters may also be awarded to any interpreter or organization who, in the opinion of the members of the JURY, merits it even though a nomination has not been submitted.

  • THIRD. The call for submissions for the Italia Morayta Award for community interpreters will be launched on July 1 of the year immediately prior to the year it is awarded.

Italia Morayta Award for research work

  • FIRST. Any Mexican or foreign graduate at undergraduate, masters or doctorate level in the fields of translation or interpreting may present a piece of research (undergraduate or masters thesis) in Spanish that has been completed in the past 4 years, and is no longer than 35,000 words. This text must be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 1,500 words.

  • SECOND. The call for submissions for the Italia Morayta Award for research work in pursuit of an academic degree in the fields of translation and interpreting will be launched on July 1 of the year immediately prior to the year it is awarded.

  • THIRD. Candidates must send their texts and abstracts anonymously, using a pseudonym (including an electronic version) at the latest on August 30 of the year immediately prior to the year the Italia Morayta Award for research work in pursuit of an academic degree in the fields of translation and interpreting is awarded, to the postal address given alongside the name of Gonzalo Celorio Morayta, PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, who will make a pre-selection and send the list of finalists to the jury. All submissions must be accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the name and contact details of the candidate.

  • FOURTH. The identity of the candidates and the content of the deliberations will be considered confidential. The documents will be destroyed following the decision.

  • FIFTH. The JURY will be comprised of the STEERING COMMITTEE and by two specialists on the issue selected by the STEERING COMMITTEE. The JURY must meet in person or video conference to make a decision. The STEERING COMMITTEE will determine which of its members will act as President and Secretary of the jury respectively. The members of the BOARD OF DIRECTORS will have voice but no vote in the deliberations and reserve the collective, but not individual, right to veto any candidate.

  • SIXTH. The decision of the JURY is final and shall be made public on January 23 of the year in which the Italia Morayta Award for research work in pursuit of an academic degree in the fields of translation and interpreting will be awarded. The BOARD OF DIRECTORS will establish the date of presentation of the Italia Morayta Award for research work in pursuit of an academic degree in the fields of translation and interpreting and will first advise the person selected, also informing them that their guests will be welcome at the award ceremony.

  • SEVENTH. Members of the JURY or members of the BOARD OF DIRECTORS cannot be candidates, but may make nominations.
